Worldbuilding exchange letter
Dear Writer,
Thanks so much for writing for me! I love worldbuilding so much, so I'm going to be thrilled at whatever you create! The prompts below are just some guidelines if you need them - but I'll be happy with whatever delicious worldbuilding you give me!
I love both fanfic and whatever in-universe meta you want to do - letters, reports, transcripts, policy statements, research notes - go wild my dude.
Just some general DNWs: Non-con, hate sex, infidelity, romantic jealousy, abusive f/f relationships, graphic mutilation/eye horror/hand horror/body horror with a living, aware person (corpse mutilation is fine and zombie mutilation is fine), Character-bashing (character-critical is great, but no bashing please).
And for this exchange, I would prefer if ships are kept to a minimum, although imply or include whichever you like, especially queer relationships. I'm not going to make it a DNW since it may enhance the worldbuilding in some cases.
Harry Potter (Wizarding World (No Pottermore)):
Characters - Harry Potter, Severus Snape, Bill Weasley, Ignotus Peverell, Antioch Peverell, Any or No, Original Characters
WB - Wand Lore, Spell Creation, Potions and Potions Research, Magical Runes, Early Wizarding History, Literature
Wand Lore: JKR gave us some okay-ish wood wandlore stuff in Pottermore - feel free to incorporate that even though this is No Pottermore - but also feel free to discard it. Why do wands work? How were the first wands created? How was the Elder Wand made - did death actually make it, or did the Peverells figure out how to make such a powerful wand? Why is the Elder Wand a "powerful" wand? Are there stereotypes based on people's wand cores or woods? What is involved with the wand "choosing the wizard"? How sentient are they?
Spell Creation: How does magic even work in the Potter universe? What components are actually important for magic? Why are there so many bastardized latin spells taught at Hogwarts but no Old English or Gaelic based spells? What are spells? What sort of work goes into crafting them? Are there dedicated spell creators and how do they make a living? How did Snape create Sectumsempra when he was a sixth year?
Potions and Potions Research: I love any sort of fiddly worldbuilding with this - give me all the tiny details about why you need to chop or dice or why you need to pick your fluxweed at a new moon or whatever. Is British potions theory different from eastern or new world potions theory, since the flora and fauna aren't the same? What are the theoretical underpinnings of the field? How do traditional potions (potions brewed in the home, passed down through families, etc.) differ from the lofty research of potions masters? How do potions masters share their results? Why do potions work? How do you design a potions experiment?
Magical Runes: I know that "officially" Runes is just an ancient language, but I love all the fanon things where they're the basis of wards and enchantments and sometimes even spell creation. You can write anywhere on this spectrum. If it's just a language, what sort of texts are written in it, and why is it so important? If there's actual magical implications to them, why are they magical? How do you build wards or enchantments with them? Can other languages be used, not just (presumably) Elder and Younger Futhark? Why do you need Ancient Runes for cursebreaking? How do you break a curse with runes?
Early Wizarding History: Go as "early" as you like. I'm not too good with my ancient history, so don't worry about fucking up the details of muggle history. Some wizarding history that could be cool to explore: the Peverell brothers and the creation of the Hallows, why Hogwarts was founded and education before Hogwarts, early forms of magic, and when wizards created the statute of secrecy. Other creatures' history would be fascinating too - why were there so many goblin wars, and what was the political and financial landscape as a result of them?
Literature: What sort of fictional books exist in the wizarding world? Are there books that are regarded as "classics"? What about wizarding philosophy? Are there certain books that form the basis for potions research, spell creation, or wand lore? Why are so many books cursed, and what does that say about how magic works or the wizarding world's approach to sharing knowledge?
Naruto (No Boruto):
Characters - Uzumaki Naruto, Orochimaru, Kyuubi, Aburame Shino, Nara Shikamaru, Any or No, Original
WB - International Politics, Sealing, Jutsu Creation, Science and Technology, Tailed Beasts, Outside the Elemental Countries, Uzumaki Clan, Uzushiogakure
International Politics: How do countries negotiate with each other, especially considering the internal balance between the Hidden Villages and the Daimyo? How are treaties formed? Are political marriages common? What is Sound Village's place in this established system?
Sealing: How does sealing work? What are the principles underlying seals? What is up with the Shinigami shit when Minato sealed the Kyuubi into Naruto? Give me all the fiddly details of seals - I'm here for it.
Jutsu Creation: How can you create a Jutsu? How do hand signs interact with chakra to give you a specific jutsu? What other components are necessary for it? What is the political process of jutsu creation in a Hidden Village? Are there jutsu in other villages that use different hand signs?
Science and Technology: I always complain that a militaristic society wouldn't have refrigerators but no chemical warfare (you have Freon but not gunpowder or like, mustard gas?) or TVs but no long-range communication devices. How does technology function within this society? Is it powered by chakra? And with Orochimaru's experiments with (essentially) gene splicing - how much biology do they understand? How is the science of this world integrated with chakra and with sealing?
Outside the Elemental Countries: What's out there? Has anyone explored it?
Uzumaki Clan and Uzushiogakure: What are the political repercussions of Uzushio's fall? How did the Uzumaki develop their sealing? What would a city that specialized in sealing look like? Is there a deeper reason that it was attacked?
Primordia:
Characters: Horatio Nullbuilt, Crispin Horatiobuilt, Any or No
WB: Life in the Dunes, Building of Crispin
Life in the Dunes: How do robots survive out here, with the sand and the lack of power sources? Are there any robot-created civilizations? Are there other abandoned and dying robots like Goliath and Ever-Faithful Leobuilt? How were these dunes created? What were they before? Are there areas in the world that aren't a desert?
Building of Crispin: Why did Horatio built Crispin? How did he collect the parts and how did he design him? Is he a creation of Horatio, Version 5? Did some of the other versions have the idea for Crispin first? How did Horatio create or find the mag-lev unit?
Animal Crossing:
Characters: Any or No, Original
WB: Public Works projects, Economy, Happy Home Academy Home Inspections
Okay, so I honestly have very few specific ideas for this fandom. I just love the cute humor of Animal Crossing.
Home Inspections: Who even does the inspections? Where do they live? What do they do when they're not rating houses at 6am? What do they do if someone wakes up?
Economy: How has the Tom Nook empire cornered the market? Why am I being paid so much for beetles and who is buying them? Does anyone besides me and the shopkeepers have a job?
Public Works projects: Why is there a gyroid in charge of money collection? Who are we paying to build the public works projects? Are there campaigns to raise money for them?
Boku No Hero Academia:
Characters: Midoriya Izuku, Sir Nighteye, Nedzu, Tsukauchi Naomasa, Aizawa Shouta, Any or No
WB: International Pro Hero Cooperation, Foresight Quirks, Pro Hero Fandom, Science and Technology, Hero Media, Police/Hero Politics, Villain Prisons
International Pro Hero Cooperation: Do heroes commonly work in other countries? Is there an exchange program? In the case of an internationally operating villain, who has jurisdiction? Are there tense hero politics between some countries? Is there an international task force?
Foresight Quirks: How do they work and what does that imply about the future? Has the philosophy about the future and free will and predestination been impacted by the advent of foresight quirks? Are there other quirks other than Sir Nighteye's that can see into the future? Can they be wrong, and if so how? Does it depend on the quirk? How are people with foresight quirks treated? Are foresight quirks regarded as villainous or heroic or do they occupy a hazy grey area? Have there been villains with foresight quirks?
Pro Hero Fandom: What does the fanfiction look like? The shipping? The Discourse? The conventions and the merchandise? Are there mainstream and hipster parts of the fandom and what does that look like? Do heroes have their own TV shows and comics?
Science and Technology: Quirk science - where is it at and what does it look like? How does the development of hero tech work, and what are the politics around it? What is the state of space exploration? Physics? Chemistry? Biology? How has the development of hero technology impacted the technology of the everyday world?
Hero Media: What's the relationship between the heroes and the media? How do underground heroes operate in a world where heroes are very highly commercialized? Are there tabloids? How much does the media pry into heroes' private lives? If the relationship is antagonistic, does that bleed over into the interactions between the management and the heroics students?
Police/Hero Politics: Do they butt heads? Where do the responsibilities of heroes stop and the job of the police begin? How are quirkless people treated on the police force and does that create tension with the quirked heroes? Does the hero media hamper police investigations? How do the police and heroes cooperate? Is there an outreach program to get some of the kids to be police officers that might want to be heroes? How much cooperation is there between the police and underground heroes?
Villain Prisons: How do they keep people with dangerous quirks contained? Is being a prison guard a dangerous job? How much do the public know about the prisons? Have there been escapes in the past? What are the conditions like at the prisons? Are there prison gangs or prison culture? We've only seen maximum security, but how do they rehabilitate villains that will get released eventually?
Most of all, I hope you have fun writing the story! If you do, then I'll have fun reading it!

- clever explanations or interpretations of canon plotholes
- canon-divergent AUs
- science and research
- ambiguity
- grey morality/complex moral reasoning
- magical realism
- time travel
- surrealism (playing with the border between reality and unreality)
- stories about stories (like, for example, how a story has power to influence things, how belief and retelling can shape reality, meta about characters as characters in a story - think Rosencrantz and Guildenstern are Dead, etc.)
- creeping, atmospheric horror
- characters being intelligent and competent
- ROBOTS
- robots and free will and choice
